COLONEL ADRIAN R. BYERS

Colonel Adrian Byers is the Vice Commander, 514th Air Mobility Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst NJ. The 514th Air Mobility Wing is an associate Reserve wing comprised of 24 subordinate units that support airlift, air refueling and aeromedical evacuation missions using KC-10 Extender and C-17
Globemaster III aircraft. Colonel Byers is responsible for training and equipping more than 2,200 personnel, including Air Reserve Technicians and Traditional Reservists
.

Prior to his assignment as vice commander, he served as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee on the Headquarters Air Staff A9, Studies Analyses and Assessments as the Liaison to Air Force Lessons Learned where he conducted general officer steering group research projects.

 

Preceding his Headquarters Air Staff assignment, he commanded the 6th Operations Support Squadron, at MacDill AFB FL.  There, he was responsible for all operational aspects of a diverse squadron with more than 150 officers, enlisted, and civilian members providing direct support to the 6th Air Mobility Wing’s global air refueling and airlift missions.  In addition, he provided leadership to six flights responsible for mission development, tactics employment, airfield management, scheduling, air traffic control, aircrew flight equipment, host aviation resource management, combat crew communication, intelligence and weather services.

 

As a staff officer, Colonel Byers served on the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) directly supporting the Director and Vice Director of J8, Force Structure, Resources, and Assessment Directorate.  The colonel served as the executive assistant to the Vice Director J8 and organized both high level meetings and coordinated the directorate’s efforts across the CJCS, the services and with the Office of the Secretary of Defense.  As an action officer in J8 he developed and facilitated simulations and wargaming solutions for the CJCS and as required for the Secretary of Defense.  Just prior to his assignment on the Joint Staff, he served at US Joint Forces Command, where he served as the Acting Deputy Director of the Washington Liaison Office (WLO) in the Pentagon.  As the Deputy Director of the WLO, Colonel Byers assisted with General/Flag Officer travel to the National Capitol Region, and coordinated General/Flag Officer invitations to CJCS meetings in the Pentagon.  Additionally, Colonel Byers served at Grand Forks AFB, where he held several wing staff positions to include; Wing Executive Officer to the Commander; Chief, Wing Plans and Programs, and Chief, Wing Operations Center.  In addition to his staff duties Colonel Byers maintained the rated position of KC-135R/T Instructor Aircraft Commander.

 

Colonel Byers is a graduate of US Army Command and General Staff College where he holds a Masters in Military Art and Science with a specialty of Military History and he holds a Masters in Business Administration from Norwich University.  He is an Air Mobility Command PHOENIX REACH cross-flow aviator (C-5A/B/C and KC-135R/T) and has multiple deployments in support of Operations ENDURING and IRAQI FREEDOM. He is a command pilot, having logged over 3,000 hours, and over 280 combat hours in both airlift and tanker aircraft.  In his civilian career, he holds a FAA Airline Transport Pilot license and works for a major commercial airline.
