Clergy from areas surrounding McGuire Air Force Base spent time "in the heavens" Feb. 7 as they witnessed a KC-10 Extender mid-air refuel other military cargo and fighter aircraft.

As part of the 514th Air Mobility Wing's first Clergy Day program, 28 men and women of the cloth spent the day getting a close look at the Reserve tanker and cargo mission. In addition, they were given insight as to how the military chaplain staff supports that mission.

The group expressed appreciation for the aircrew's skills and awe of the aircraft's capabilities during their base tour after landing.

"Everybody was gracious, warm and friendly," said Stanton Miller, pastor of Calvary Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, located just outside McGuire in Wrightstown, N.J. "The flight was awesome and a once in a lifetime event," he added. The pastor has watched the aircraft land and takeoff for 18 years and said he was thrilled at the opportunity to fly.

The chaplain staff planned the events of Clergy Day centered on three themes: relationship, recognition and recruiting.

"In our recognition we want to thank the local clergy for their support of our Airmen," said Chaplain (Major) Michael Seaman of the 514th AMW Chaplain's Office, "We look to build stronger relationships with them so that we can multiply our ministry to both our Reservists and community."

Prior to the flight, each member of the 514th chaplain staff gave a brief presentation on an aspect of military chaplaincy. Topics included the diversity of denominations, deployment, and the chaplain assistant program.

"We had the privilege to introduce the Air Force way of ministry to a distinguished group of area clergy," said Chaplain (Major) Peter G. Souritzidis, wing chaplain.

Guests were given information on how they can become part of the AF Reserve as a chaplain or chaplain assistant.

The next Clergy Day is slated for 2011. For more information about the program contact the 514th chaplain staff at (609) 754-3261.
