JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, NJ -- Members of the 714th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and 76th Air Refueling Squadron, organized a tour for a 7-year-old boy who is battling cancer, April 17, on the flight line here.
Citizen Airmen organized the tour with students of Temple University and Love Your Melon, a brand ran by college students whose mission is to give hats to every child battling cancer.
"We started with a tour of a KC-10 Extender aircraft, simulator and finished with an award ceremony for him," said Staff Sgt. Julia Rivera, a boom operator assigned to the 76th ARS. "We wanted to give him a chance to experience something different and have a great time doing it."
The tour was made possible by several members of both squadrons.
"It was a big team effort to make all the right phone calls and schedule when he was going to go out to the jet," said Tech. Sgt. Oshanda Erb, a KC-10 crew chief, assigned to the 714th AMXS. We made signs for him, and everyone just really came together to make this event happen."
Love Your Melon Campus Crew were able to experience the tour with him.
"The tour today was amazing and he was so excited and into everything," said Erin McComb, president of LYCC, Temple University. "He wasn't shy at all and I think he got a lot out of the tour."
LYMCC hold events year round to raise money and awareness for the organization.
"We sell our items online and for every item we sell we earn credits," said McComb. "Once we reach a certain amount of credits we are able to take children battling cancer on adventures like this."
